Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coins are a gift with a purpose

CINCINNATI – Give a gift that gives back this holiday season. The U.S. Mint’s limited-edition Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coins celebrate the bravery, sacrifice and leadership of Harriet Tubman while supporting the work and mission of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn, NY. The coin series is only available for a limited time and is available online through the U.S. Mint or in person at the Freedom Center. 

Harriet Tubman’s life is the embodiment of the relentless pursuit of justice and equity. After escaping slavery herself, she risked her life on over a dozen trips to lead 70 enslaved people to freedom as a conductor on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, she served as a nurse, Union spy and the first woman to lead an armed military expedition during the war, freeing over 700 enslaved people during the Combahee River raid. Her legacy is one of courage and determination.

The Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coins capture her indomitable spirit and enduring legacy through three coins and three defining chapters of her life:

• Half-dollar coin: Reflects Harriet Tubman’s service during the Civil War, spyglass in hand as she strategizes for Union victory.
• Silver dollar coin: Portrays the Moses of her people as a fearless conductor on the Underground Railroad, her hand extended as an invitation to freedom.
• $5 gold coin: Depicts Harriet Tubman in her later years, looking confidently into a future where all may be free.

“At long last, these commemorative coins enshrine Harriet Tubman among our nation’s pantheon of heroes,” said Woodrow Keown, Jr., president & COO of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “This coin collection is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to continue her story and to support two organizations who are similarly lighting the way and conducting people toward freedom at a critical moment in our nation’s history.”

Keown will join Ventris C. Gibson, the first Black female director of the U.S. Mint, at the New York Stock Exchange on December 11, hosted by Seneca Women, a global women’s leadership platform, in partnership with P&G. Together, they will reflect on Harriet Tubman’s legacy and relevance today and the significance of the coin related to leadership and financial education. The program will be part of the Young Women’s Financial Wellness Forum, symbolizing the start of a new era of financial empowerment for young women.
